EFA is member and facilitator of the group, alongside the European Respiratory Society (ERS), and together we supported the group in advocating for lung health to be prioritised at European level. EFA representative in the ELHG is EFA Board Member, Christine Strous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Moments in 2024<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A significant achievement of ELHG was the publication of a policy brief \u2018#KeepBreathing: A Vision for EU Action on Lung Health 2024-2029\u2019, for the new EU mandate (2024-2029), outlining concrete proposals for EU action on lung health. To drive this agenda forward, the group launched several high-impact initiatives throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One key initiative was the launch event of the recommendations in the brief with Members of the European Parliament (MEP) Tomislav Sokol, Radka Maxov\u00e1, and Stelios Kympouropoulos. They emphasised the urgent need for stronger EU action on lung health and set the stage for the first European High-Level Forum on Lung Health, organised by the ELHG. This event brought together partners, policymakers and experts to further advance the campaign and explore pathways to improve lung health and respiratory disease care across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1325\" height=\"737\" src=\"http:\/\/efanet.org\/annual-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/MEP_LHG_-_event_screenshot.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-181\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From top left: MEP Stelios Kympouropoulos, MEP Radka Maxov\u00e1, Anya Sitaram (Moderator), MEP Tomislav Sokol in the #KeepBreathing online event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Momentum continued in <strong>March<\/strong>, when EFA, on behalf of the&nbsp;ELHG, was selected to present the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breathevision.eu\/keepbreathing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#KeepBreathing<\/a>&nbsp;lung health campaign during the European Commission\u2019s DG SANTE stakeholder&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/health.ec.europa.eu\/events\/stakeholder-webinar-prevention-non-communicable-diseases-2024-03-20_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">webinar<\/a>&nbsp;on prevention of non-communicable diseases. This platform allowed us to bring lung health to the forefront of the EU policy priority planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"384\" src=\"http:\/\/efanet.org\/annual-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ELHG_-_DG_SANTE_B1__B4_Marianne_Takki_Yvette_Azzopardi_Christine_Redecker_-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-183\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The European Lung Health Group representatives meet the representatives of DG SANTE, European Commission in Luxembourg.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In May, EFA together with ERS presented the #KeepBreathing campaign to the <strong>European Commission&#8217;s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA)<\/strong>. We highlighted the need for resilient health systems and the integration of lung health into policies on climate change and emergency preparedness. EFA\u2019s Director of Policy, Isabel Proa\u00f1o and ERS Dr. Eva Polverino emphasised investing in prevention and addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to strengthen healthcare systems and better prepare for future health crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"452\" src=\"http:\/\/efanet.org\/annual-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/HERA.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-184\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Julie Spony, EPF Policy Officer and Isabel Proa\u00f1o, EFA Director of Policy and Communications at the HERA Conference.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, representatives from EFA and the ERS travelled to Luxembourg on behalf of the ELHG to meet with the <strong>European Commission Directorate-Generals of Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), and the Communications, Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT)<\/strong> to discuss support for lung health in the EU4Health and Digital Europe programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, EFA was proud to represent the ELHG and its Keep Breathing campaign at the <strong>European Patients&#8217; Forum\u2019s High-Level Policy Event in Brussels<\/strong>, calling for a comprehensive EU lung health policy. The campaign emphasises the need for preventive measures, improved care and patient-centred research to support respiratory patients across Europe. EFA highlighted the importance of patient voices in shaping EU health policy, advocating for a more resilient, inclusive healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"662\" src=\"http:\/\/efanet.org\/annual-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/MP-IP-at-EPF-with-KeepBreathing.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-185\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Isabel Proa\u00f1o, EFA Director of Policy and Communications and and Marcia Podest\u00e0, EFA President, at the EPF High level Policy Event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The work of the European Lung health Group and the #KeepBreathing campaign occurs in synergy with the International Respiratory Coalition (IRC) who is working at global level and supporting national coalitions in European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-custom-quote-block quote-block\"><div class=\"author-info\"><div><div class=\"author-name\">MEP Maxov\u00e1<\/div><\/div><\/div><blockquote>The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the very strong vulnerability to respiratory diseases, therefore we should prioritise lung health. It would enhance the ability of healthcare systems to response effectively to future respiratory challenges.<\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-custom-quote-block quote-block\"><div class=\"author-info\"><div><div class=\"author-name\">MEP Kympouropoulos<\/div><\/div><\/div><blockquote>It\u2019s well known that extreme weather events can impact the quality of the air and contribute to worsening respiratory issues that can be chronic but also lethal.<\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-custom-quote-block quote-block\"><div class=\"author-info\"><div><div class=\"author-name\">MEP Sokol<\/div><\/div><\/div><blockquote>What we can do in the European Parliament is to give more priority to health in general. Currently we have the same committee in the Parliament which is in charge for environment and health.<\/blockquote><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>#KeepBreathing in numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-custom-key-figures key-figures-block\"><div class=\"key-figures-list\"><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">9<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">ELHG internal meetings (two in person).<\/div><\/div><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">1<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">event to launch the #KeepBreathing campaign.<\/div><\/div><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">1<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">press release<\/div><\/div><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">9<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">European level patients and healthcare professionals&#8217; organisations gathering 179 member associations across 34 European countries, including 9 from non-EU states<\/div><\/div><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">+7,200<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">website views<\/div><\/div><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">+4,400<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">visitors<\/div><\/div><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">+45,600<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">impressions across social media platforms<\/div><\/div><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">+400<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">new followers<\/div><\/div><div class=\"key-figure\"><div class=\"key-number\">1<\/div><div class=\"figure-description\">social media filter<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Capacity building<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2022, EFA has been supporting its community of members with scholarships to participate in the European Patients\u2019 Academy on Therapeutic Innovation\u2019s (EUPATI) Patient Expert Training Programme. The training is designed for patients and patient representatives to learn more about research and drug development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, EFA provided five scholarships to allergy, asthma and\/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and patient representatives&nbsp;to complete the EUPATI Patient Expert Training Programme. In October, we also celebrated in Madrid the graduation of six EUPATI fellows who had received the EFA\u2019s scholarships the previous year. These includes three members of the EFA Youth Parliament (from Ireland and Spain), and representatives from the Austrian Lung Union (Austria), Allergy and Me (Serbia) and the Spanish Association for People with Food and Latex Allergy (Spain).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-custom-quote-block quote-block\"><div class=\"author-info\"><div><div class=\"author-name\">EUPATI Graduate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><blockquote>I extend my gratitude to the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients&#8217;\u200b Associations (EFA) for allowing me to partake in the transformative program.
