PREVENT, - Chemicals

As Accredited Stakeholder to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), EFA participated in the 2020 Joint Forum-BPRS (Biocidal Products Regulation Subgroup) to bring the perspective of people living with allergies and airways diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The content of the day included updates of the projects within the Forum. These nine projects aim to advance the national enforcement and compliance of chemicals commercialised under REACH, the EU Regulation of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.

Our takeaways were:

  • Industry efforts aim to quickly deliver to the market hand sanitisers and disinfectants to protect people against the pandemic, through what they call a fast-track guideline, presented by the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC)
  • A 2020 report on the legal vacuums to retreat unsafe products sold online (products not compliant with REACH Regulation and posing a threat to health), presented by the European Consumers Organisation (BEUC)

We also heard about streamlining the classification of petroleum substances of unknown or variable composition (UVCBs) and the enforcement of REACH duties to use animal testing as a last resort.
