On the 25th of April, EFA’s Roberta Savli took part in an EU Roundtable on Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (a genetic disorder that can cause serious lung or liver disease, including COPD), marking the first European Alpha-1 Awareness Day.
The topic is particularly crucial for EFA as 3% of COPD patients are also Alpha-1 patients, and Alpha-1 is the most widely recognised rare genetic cause of COPD. We contributed to the discussions on how to better raise awareness on the disease and involve patients, two common challenges in our disease area too, and identified possible joint advocacy actions towards the EU institutions, mainly focused on early diagnosis, and the fight against smoking and air pollution.
