On June 17th, the European Commission Directorate General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) organised a conference on medicines for rare diseases and children. About 150 experts were present from across the EU, representing national governments and health authorities, academia, patient and health professionals’ organisations and pharmaceutical industry.
Evaluation of EU Regulation on Orphan Medicinal Products and Paediatric Medicines
The conference took place as part of the joint evaluation of both EU regulations on Orphan Medicinal Products and Paediatric Medicines. The regulations have been put in place in early 2000s, aiming at increasing therapeutic choices for children and patients suffering from rare diseases.
Interactive sessions call stakeholders for participation
In the event, opened by Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis, stakeholders were asked to come forward with their views, suggestions and ideas with respect to the two regulations. The interactive and participatory sessions focussed among others on the importance of a common understanding and quantifying of unmet medicinal needs.
