Many asthma patients have dust mite allergy, but maybe not for so long: researchers from France and Austria have developed a new preventive vaccine.

House dust mites are microscopic organisms that thrive in warm and humid houses with lots of food – human and animal skin and mould spores. House mite allergy is a hypersensitive reaction to proteins in the excrement of dust mites

The mites prefer to live in beds, which contain lots of moisture from our breath and bodies, plus the shed skin cells and, because we spend about a third of the day in bed, we inhale large quantities of dust mite allergens.

Although it is almost impossible to avoid dust mites, the new vaccine was very effective when tested on mice: thanks to the vaccine the bronchial reaction to two types of house dust mites was completely removed from the animals.

Although the development of a human vaccine could still require many years of research, it might become a great alternative to immunotherapy and a real solution for millions of people having allergic diseases.
