The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) carried out a public consultation to receive input from the scientific community and all interested parties on the guidance on the use of the Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC) approach in food safety assessment.
Threshold of Toxicological Concern approach
The Threshold of Toxicological Concern approach is a pragmatic, scientifically valid methodology to assess the safety of substances of unknown toxicity found in food. It is a screening and prioritisation tool for the risk assessment of chemicals when hazard data are incomplete and human exposure can be estimated.
Guidance considers interested parties’ input
Based on the comments received from interested parties by January this year, EFSA published a final “Guidance on the use of the Threshold of Toxicological Concern approach in food safety assessment” in early June, including among others a practical TTC decision tree.
The full guidelines document can be found here.
